The Kentucky State Police Post 12 announced it will conduct periodic traffic safety checkpoints at approved locations throughout its jurisdiction, which includes Anderson, Fayette, Franklin, Scott, Shelby, Spencer and Woodford counties.

The checkpoints will focus on detecting operator impairment, verifying valid driver licenses, and confirming proper vehicle registration and insurance. Officers will address any other violations of law or public safety issues that arise during the stops. A complete list of approved checkpoint locations is available online.

The agency said it conducts traffic safety checkpoints as part of broader efforts to promote public safety on roadways. Officers use these high-visibility enforcement efforts to deter violations of Kentucky traffic and motor vehicle laws outlined in the Kentucky Revised Statutes.

According to traffic safety experts, officers at checkpoints focus on identifying what are known as "D" drivers – those who are drunk, drugged, drowsy or distracted. The checkpoints also allow law enforcement to identify suspended or unlicensed drivers, individuals with active warrants, and vehicles that lack proper insurance or registration.

Both the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommend traffic safety checkpoints as an effective way to reduce traffic crashes. When properly publicized, such checkpoints can deter impaired and unlicensed driving.

Drivers should have their operator's license, vehicle registration receipt and proof of insurance readily available when approaching a checkpoint. Those without violations and minimal traffic congestion can expect brief delays at the checkpoints.
