LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will install rumble strips on two major highways in the Lexington area beginning next week, requiring alternating lane closures during daytime work hours, according to a KYTC District 7 traffic advisory.

Rumble strip installation on U.S. 60 in Montgomery County is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28, from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Crews will install edge line rumble strips on Winchester Road between mile points 1.7 and 3.4, spanning from approximately one-quarter mile before Bent Brook Drive east to Meadow View Drive.

Work in Fayette County begins Tuesday, Sept. 29, on U.S. 421 (Leestown Road) between mile points 4.0 and 8.1, from Ruffian Way north to just before Browns Mill Road. Crews will install both edge line and centerline rumble strips during the work, which is expected to take two to three days.

Rumble strips are raised or grooved patterns installed on road surfaces designed to alert drivers through vibration and noise when their vehicles drift out of the intended lane, reducing accidents caused by drowsy or distracted driving. The installations are part of safety improvement projects along Kentucky highways.

Motorists should exercise caution when traveling through the work zones and watch for crews and equipment, KYTC officials said. Alternating lane closures will remain in effect while construction takes place.
