Lexington is marking the federal holiday with a week of community celebrations running from June 14 through June 21. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, making it the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
