Lexington Government Center reopens after plumbing emergency
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Center is reopening Monday morning after a plumbing emergency forced the downtown facility to close early on Friday, according to a statement from the Mayor's Office.
The Government Center at 200 E. Main St. will resume normal operating hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24. The building closed at 11 a.m. Friday due to major leaks that required most restrooms throughout the building to be closed. Repairs were completed over the weekend.
The 106-year-old Government Center houses multiple city departments and serves as the seat of local government. The building is one of several downtown facilities that comprise Lexington's government complex. Visitors to the building must sign in at the security desk and provide photo identification.
The city has previously identified aging infrastructure as a concern at the downtown facility. City officials have stated that repairs to the current Government Center would cost an estimated $55 million for basic upkeep and code compliance, prompting consideration of a new municipal building as part of a public-private partnership.
