Lexington Humane Society names new president as Malcomb retires
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington Humane Society announced a leadership transition as President Susan Malcomb prepares to retire after nearly two decades leading the organization.
Malcomb, who has guided the society through a period of sustained growth in adoptions, foster participation, and donor support, will step down effective August 1, 2025. Rebecca Sherman, board chair of the Lexington Humane Society, praised Malcomb's tenure, saying her "dedication, vision, and compassion have left a lasting legacy."
Summer Jackson will succeed Malcomb as president. Jackson has served with the organization for more than a decade, most recently as Vice President of Human Resources and Risk Management. Sherman expressed confidence in the transition, noting that Jackson's "long-standing dedication and familiarity with our mission ensure a seamless transition, and a strong future for the organization."
Founded in 1889 by J. William Sayre, the Lexington Humane Society is the largest pet adoption agency in Central Kentucky and operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dependent entirely on private donations, grants, and community support. The organization provides adoptions, community education on responsible pet care, and subsidized spay and neuter services for qualifying families. It receives no government funding or support from national animal welfare groups.
