Lexington officer faces long recovery after catastrophic traffic stop injuries
LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Lexington Police officer seriously injured during an April 14 traffic stop faces lifelong challenges following what the department described as "catastrophic" injuries, including the amputation of his right arm, according to Lex 18 News.
Officer Kevin Van Wert continues his recovery with multiple surgeries ahead, the Lexington Police Department said in a Wednesday evening update. "He has a long road ahead of him, but we are thankful that he is still here with us," LPD stated.
Van Wert was dragged into a light pole by 31-year-old Naqeeb Mufallah near a Meijer Gas Station on North Broadway during the traffic stop. Mufallah, who has a documented history of assaulting law enforcement officers, was charged in connection with the incident. His case was waived to a grand jury Monday.
On Tuesday, the department held a gathering at Lexington Christian Academy to update personnel and begin the healing process. Officers and employees from every shift and unit across the department attended, joined by members of the Lexington Fire Department.
"This offered us, as a department, the chance to start the healing process and to provide our officers and employees with an update on Kevin," police said in a statement.
Van Wert's family has requested privacy during his recovery period. A fundraiser through Blue Wings of Hope has been established to assist with his expenses as he undergoes rehabilitation and adapts to his injuries.
