Lexington to Host Free World Cup Watch Party at Historic Kentucky Theatre
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Mayor Linda Gorton announced that the city will host a free, family-friendly watch party on July 1 for Team USA's FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match, with the historic Kentucky Theatre serving as the venue.
In partnership with FOX 56, the city said the event will allow Lexington residents to gather and cheer on Team USA as the men's national team advances in the tournament. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the match scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The watch party will be held in the State Theatre, an adjacent venue that seats approximately 350, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.
"Lexington is a city that loves sports, and loves coming together to celebrate," Gorton said in a statement. "We are excited to partner with FOX 56 and the Kentucky Theatre to create an experience that invites Lexington residents to participate in the excitement of the World Cup."
The event coincides with the city's Fourth of July celebration preparations. "What's more patriotic than cheering on Team USA?" Gorton said.
Members of Lexington Sporting Club's soccer teams will attend to meet fans and celebrate Team USA's World Cup run. The club will sell USA-themed merchandise and offer fans a free photo opportunity with the women's recent championship trophy.
The Kentucky Theatre, which first opened in October 1922, is one of Lexington's most iconic landmarks. The historic venue has a long tradition of bringing the community together through entertainment. "We can't think of a better place to watch this historic event than the Historic Kentucky Theatre," said the theatre's manager, referencing the building's cultural significance to the region.
