Lexington Transit Center Reopens With Major Upgrades
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Lextran's Downtown Transit Center at 150 E. Vine St. reopened to the public Tuesday after nearly eight months of renovations, marking the first significant modernization of the downtown hub in more than three decades.
The upgraded facility features real-time arrival screens, durable interior finishes, reconfigured restrooms, enhanced customer service counters, and expanded wayfinding signage designed to improve safety, functionality and rider comfort. The project cost approximately $3 million and was funded locally.
Construction began April 7, 2025, when Lextran relocated operations to temporary locations on High Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to allow the interior restructuring. The renovation included redesigned customer spaces, updated public restrooms and waiting areas, a newly designed employee break room, and space reserved for future retail options such as snacks and beverages.
"We are thrilled to be so close to the finish line," said Fred Combs, general manager at Lextran. "This project has always been about building something better for our employees and the people who rely on public transit every day, and we're proud of what's been accomplished."
The Transit Center serves nearly 20,000 passenger boardings each week and functions as the hub for Lextran's 25 fixed routes. Officials said the renovation strengthens the downtown corridor and provides new infrastructure benefiting nearby businesses, residents and visitors. Lextran continues to offer regular bus service at the regular fare of $1.
