Man charged in fatal Frankfort hit-and-run appears in court
LEXINGTON, Ky. — A 25-year-old man appeared in Franklin County District Court facing manslaughter and other charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 52-year-old woman, according to LEX 18 News.
Tyler Couch is charged with second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, and falsely reporting an accident with failure to render aid. Police said Couch struck Carey Covington with his vehicle as she walked on an access road Monday night. Rather than calling emergency services, Couch fled the scene and attempted to blame the crash on another driver.
Covington's family released a statement describing her as a devoted mother and grandmother whose compassion defined her character. "Carey was a wonderful mother and a loving grandmother to her granddaughters. She always tried to help, no matter who it was, and had a huge heart," the family said. "Her kindness touched everyone around her, and her absence leaves a hole in the hearts of all who knew her."
During the court appearance, a judge entered a not guilty plea on Couch's behalf and set his bond at $1 million, a decision that surprised Couch's father, Daryl Couch. Speaking outside the courtroom, Daryl Couch said his son felt genuine remorse for his actions. "He was scared, that's pretty much all I can say," Daryl Couch stated. "He feels remorse for what he has done."
Daryl Couch characterized his son as fundamentally good, noting that Tyler "has come a long way" and "works every day," despite expressing surprise at the bond increase. Court records indicate Tyler Couch has a prior history of traffic violations, including driving under the influence.
A follow-up hearing is scheduled for next week.
