Council Meeting Recap
So, what just happened in yesterday's Urban County Council work session on May fifth? A pretty quick thirty-seven minute meeting with a few key items. Council approved three hundred seventy-five thousand dollars for a partnership with United Way of the Bluegrass on something called the Rides United program. They also okayed a utility access agreement with Metro Fibernet for broadband infrastructure work.
Wait, three hundred seventy-five thousand for rides? What exactly is that program?
The meeting notes don't get into the specifics of what Rides United does, but it's a partnership between the city and United Way, so I'd guess it's some kind of transportation assistance program. Council also honored Pulitzer Prize winner Chahi Shaquindu with a proclamation.
That's great recognition for a local winner. Was there any pushback on that United Way spending, or did it sail through?
All the votes were voice votes, so we don't have individual council member positions, but everything passed without controversy. There was one interesting public comment though. Rick Day criticized the city's compensation study, calling it rigged and saying it hurt employees' careers.
That sounds like there might be some ongoing tension about city employee pay. Anything else noteworthy?
Mayor Gorton declared May as Building Safety Month and gave out a SPOKE Award to Tammy Schweitzer from the Revenue department. Pretty standard recognitions, but nice to see city employees getting acknowledged.
Sounds like a fairly routine session overall. Thanks for breaking that down.
