LEXINGTON, Ky. — Human remains discovered along a Floyd County riverbank have been identified as a missing Prestonsburg woman, according to LEX 18 News.

The Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville responded Tuesday to a call from Prestonsburg 911 regarding the discovery near Kentucky Route 1428. Investigators located the remains close to the river and transported them to the Kentucky State Medical Examiners Office for autopsy.

The medical examiner positively identified the remains as 38-year-old Kayla Reffitt of Prestonsburg. Reffitt had been reported missing to the Floyd County Sheriff's Office prior to the discovery.

Detective Terry Mounts is leading the investigation into the death, with assistance from Kentucky State Police Post 9 and the Floyd County Sheriff's Office. The cause of death remains under investigation as authorities continue their work on the case.
