Northern Kentucky students gear up for regional Girls on the Run 5K
More than 100 students across four Northern Kentucky school districts are building confidence and leadership skills through the Girls on the Run program, which culminates in a regional 5K on May 9 at Smale Park.
The program, according to reporting from the NKyTribune, brings together participants from Covington Independent Public Schools, Ludlow Independent Schools, Dayton Independent Schools and Bellevue Independent Schools to blend physical activity with social and emotional learning.
Covington's participation has surged dramatically in four years. The program began as a single-site effort serving eight students and has expanded to more than 90 participants across all elementary schools and the district's middle school. "Our coaches consistently see girls grow in confidence and determination as they take on new challenges," said Ashley McClure, Director of Community & Family Engagement at Covington Independent School District.
Ludlow, which has hosted the program for 14 years, and Dayton, in its 14th season, have seen lasting results as participants develop skills in empathy, conflict resolution and goal setting while forming meaningful friendships. At Bellevue, the program was reintroduced in fall 2025 after a brief hiatus and is already showing impact, with one student who initially struggled to share ideas becoming a leader of the community service project.
The program typically meets twice weekly over an eight- to 10-week season, combining interactive lessons with physical activity. Research shows Girls on the Run makes a stronger impact than organized sports in teaching critical life skills, and more than 90 percent of participants experience increased confidence and improved peer relationships.
The May 9 celebratory 5K provides participants of all abilities a tangible sense of accomplishment. Community support has been strong, with volunteers, families and school staff participating in practices and the culminating event. "Please consider supporting GOTR through a donation or running in the 5K race," said Tiffany Hicks, Bellevue's GOTR coach. More information is available at gotrcincinnati.org.
