LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County Public Schools has selected Jeremy Day, a school resource officer, as the Kids' Champion for September 2026. Interim Superintendent Bill Bradford surprised him with the award this week, and the Urban County Council's school board will salute him at their Sept. 21 action meeting.

Day, who works at Garden Springs and James Lane Allen elementary schools, earned the recognition primarily for his summer fundraising initiative. His Fayette 50: Miles for Smiles campaign raised more than $10,000 to help families outfit their children for the school year. According to reports, Day walked 50 miles to all 29 district elementary schools on July 23, raising $12,000 — exceeding the original $10,000 goal. The funds provided back-to-school essentials including shoes, clothing, and backpacks for more than 60 FCPS students shopping in August.

Day's commitment to the fundraiser stems from personal experience. He grew up in Lexington and relied on donations from churches and community organizations to obtain his own school supplies. "Every student deserves to start the school year feeling confident and ready to learn," he said during the campaign. "This walk is an opportunity for our community to come together and support children who may need a little extra help."

The FCPS Kids' Champion program, sponsored by Forcht Bank, recognizes district and school staff members who go above and beyond to advocate for student needs and foster a positive environment. Each month during the school year, the district honors an outstanding member of Team FCPS who displays exceptional dedication to students and embodies innovation, advocacy, empathy, knowledge, and a positive attitude. Forcht Bank provides a $100 award for each monthly winner and $1,000 in May for the school year's overall champion.
