Planning Commission to review Blue Sky industrial plan update
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Planning Commission will hold a work session Wednesday to review updates on three major planning initiatives affecting Lexington's future development, including a first draft of the sweeping Blue Sky industrial corridor master plan.
Consultant Sam Castro of TSW Design is scheduled to present a preliminary version of the Blue Sky Small Area Plan, which aims to guide development of the city's oldest industrial park. The plan would assess the Blue Sky Activity Center's current infrastructure and economic potential, while developing recommendations for zoning updates and long-term employment strategies. According to earlier commission presentations, the vision includes a 20-plus-year transformation into an executive office-industrial campus, with near-term improvements including pedestrian paths and stormwater infrastructure upgrades.
The agenda also includes an update on the Downtown Area Master Plan, which is being developed to guide growth and revitalization of the city's core. That effort, led by planning consultant MKSK, is focused on addressing economic and social needs while aligning public spaces and infrastructure with long-term community vision.
Additionally, Planning Commission Chair Zach Davis is set to present an update from the Solar Work Group, which recently recommended new protections for farmland, stronger decommissioning rules, and new pathways for solar installations on brownfield properties. The group's proposals include requirements for continued farming on-site, annual inspections, and at least 85 percent ground coverage remaining vegetated.
The work session is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET at the Phoenix Building's third-floor conference room. Work sessions typically involve discussion of proposed agenda items before formal votes are taken at regular commission meetings.
