Renegade opens as Derby favorite despite unlucky No. 1 post
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Renegade, a colt trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., opened as the morning line favorite for the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby despite drawing the No. 1 post position, according to LEX 18 News. The horse is listed at 4-1 odds for the May 2 race at Churchill Downs.
The inside rail post presents a significant historical challenge. No horse has won the Kentucky Derby from the No. 1 post since Ferdinand in 1986, though Lookin At Lee finished second from that position in 2017.
Brad Cox's Commandment and Further Ado are the second and third betting choices at 6-1 each in a field of 20 horses. Chief Wallabee rounds out the top contenders at 8-1, with The Puma at 10-1.
Cox expressed satisfaction with the post draws for his top two contenders. "Very happy with that post," Cox said of Further Ado at No. 18, who will be ridden by three-time Derby-winning jockey John Velazquez. "I do like the 6 with Commandment. Hopefully he can break and go forward." Cox was less enthusiastic about his third entry, Fulleffort, who drew the far-outside No. 20 post at 20-1 odds.
Two-time Triple Crown champion Bob Baffert has two shots at his seventh Derby victory, saddling Litmus Test at 30-1 and Potente at 20-1. Litmus Test secured the final spot in the field Saturday when Steve Asmussen's Chip Honcho was scratched in favor of pointing toward the Preakness Stakes on May 16.
Riley Mott, son of last year's Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Bill Mott, will train his first two horses in the Triple Crown opener with Albus (30-1) and Incredibolt (20-1). Bill Mott's bid to repeat comes via Chief Wallabee.
Post time for the race is set for 6:57 p.m. EDT.
