Senate Democrats praise temporary Lee Specialty Clinic funding
Senate Democratic Leader Gerald Neal said in a statement that the Democratic caucus appreciates Governor Beshear's efforts to find temporary funding for the Lee Specialty Clinic, which serves patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Louisville.
The clinic faced a $4.5 million budget cut that would have severely reduced services to more than 1,000 patients beginning July 15. Neal said in the statement that the temporary funding provides immediate relief, but the legislature must "fix this" and "provide adequate funding" in the upcoming session to ensure long-term stability.
Beshear announced on June 25 that he would shift $4.5 million from the Capitol Annex renovation budget to fund the clinic through the next fiscal year. The governor called the solution a "band-aid" and urged Kentuckians to contact their legislators to demand permanent funding when the General Assembly returns in January.
Neal praised the clinic as "a trusted place of care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, complex medical needs, autism, cerebral palsy, behavioral health challenges, and other serious conditions." He said Senate Democrats had warned of the consequences when the cuts were being considered by the legislature.
The budget dispute reflects a partisan disagreement over state funding priorities. Beshear blamed the Republican-led legislature for passing a budget that didn't provide enough money to maintain services, while GOP lawmakers contended that the budget included sufficient funding and that the cuts were unnecessary.
