Senate President Stivers discusses UK's role in Kentucky's future
Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers reflected on the University of Kentucky's importance to the state's future during an appearance on the "Behind the Blue" podcast, discussing how the institution can help move Kentucky forward through research, education and economic development.
Stivers, who has served as Senate president since 2013, shared personal and legislative perspectives on UK's land-grant mission and its reach across the Commonwealth. Growing up between London and Manchester in Laurel County, Stivers said his time as a UK student in Lexington broadened his understanding of Kentucky's diversity—its people, geography, industries and communities.
The Senate president described constituents' most pressing needs as access to quality jobs, reliable broadband and cell service, quality health care and education. He emphasized how UK's extension programs, education initiatives, health care services and research reach across Kentucky to address these concerns.
Stivers pointed to personal experience with cancer in his own family as evidence of why research investment matters. His mother received care at UK Markey Cancer Center, which became Kentucky's first and only NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2023. Witnessing constituents from eastern Kentucky receiving treatment there reinforced his understanding of the center's regional importance.
The conversation explored how research drives economic development beyond discoveries alone. Stivers highlighted examples across cancer care, health research, forestry, agriculture, engineering and industry partnerships, noting that research attracts talent, investment and opportunity to Kentucky communities.
Addressing rapid technological change and artificial intelligence, Stivers encouraged students to remain adaptable and prepared to retrain for jobs that may look dramatically different in coming years. He said UK and other universities must prepare students for an evolving job market.
Ultimately, Stivers argued that Kentucky's flagship university must help the state plan beyond today, becoming what he called the "tip of the spear" in providing ideas and direction for Kentucky's future.
