Star first baseman Hudson Brown returns to Kentucky baseball
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky's 2027 roster got a major jolt when star first baseman Hudson Brown withdrew his name from consideration for the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft and announced his return to Lexington on Saturday, bolstering the Wildcats' lineup for next season.
Brown, a redshirt sophomore with two remaining seasons of eligibility, put on a showcase performance throughout the 2026 season despite battling mononucleosis that caused him to miss a month of Southeastern Conference play and lose more than 25 pounds from his 6-foot-6 frame.
In 44 games, Brown slashed .333/.475/.553 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 39 RBIs. His performance in the middle of Kentucky's lineup made him the Wildcats' emotional leader down the stretch.
Brown's decision to return comes after a gut-wrenching NCAA tournament exit. Kentucky fell to No. 16 West Virginia 6-5 in 10 innings in Game 7 of the Morgantown Regional on June 1, with the Mountaineers advancing to the super regionals.
Brown's performance in the postseason underscored his value to the program. In four regional games, he went 5-of-11 with four runs, six RBIs and two home runs. In the winner-take-all Game 7, Brown hit a solo home run and later "obliterated a 440-foot home run" in the eighth inning in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to push the game to extra innings — though Kentucky did force the 10th before succumbing.
"After many prayers and thoughtful consideration, I have decided I will be returning to Kentucky," Brown said in a statement. "The support from my coaches, teammates, family, friends, and BBN means the world to me and I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue to grow on and off the field."
The Olive Branch, Mississippi native showed promise this season beyond the power numbers. He walked 28 times compared to striking out 27 times, demonstrating improved plate discipline. He also stole five bases and was hit by pitch 16 times.
Brown's return gives Kentucky a middle-of-the-order bat to lean on as the program builds its roster for the 2027 season, with other key contributors like third baseman Caeden Cloud and freshman Braxton Van Cleave also expected to return.
