State Police Announce Traffic Safety Checkpoints in Central Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky State Police Post 12 in Frankfort announced that it will conduct periodic traffic safety checkpoints at approved locations throughout its service area, according to a statement from the agency.
The checkpoints will cover Shelby, Spencer, Franklin, Anderson, Scott, Woodford, and Fayette counties. Special attention during the stops will focus on occupant protection and seatbelt compliance, sobriety, vehicle insurance, and registration violations, the agency said.
Drivers who encounter a checkpoint will be asked to present their driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. According to the Kentucky State Police website, drivers who have the required documentation and have not violated traffic laws should expect a delay of 30 seconds to one minute.
The announcement comes as the Lexington area continues efforts to improve traffic safety. The city's STREEET Safety Task Force, formed in January 2025, is investigating engineering, education, and enforcement solutions to address public demands for safer streets. Meanwhile, regional transportation leaders have established a goal of achieving zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2050.
A complete list of traffic safety checkpoint locations is available on the Kentucky State Police Post 12 website. The checkpoints are conducted in accordance with Kentucky State Police Policy and Procedures Manual to enhance enforcement of the state's traffic laws.
