LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky football coach Will Stein opened fall camp Monday with an emphasis on process over predictions, addressing an eager group of reporters as the Wildcats prepare for their season opener on September 5 against Youngstown State.

In his first media day since being hired in December, Stein credited an elite summer preparation period and highlighted several key position players expected to contribute during fall practice. He noted that Nic Anderson, Jovantae Barnes and Jaden Smith are working back into full-speed work while defensive lineman Sam Greene is "looking great" and preparing to be a factor on defense.

"Fall camp is all about details and execution of our scheme," Stein said, emphasizing that the next 30 days leading to the season opener would focus on building a competitive environment from top to bottom of the roster. "There really is still no starters. We can project out where we feel like this team is going to be, but I want this team to be as competitive as possible from top down with the roster."

Stein also addressed his recent comments at SEC Media Days in July, when he said Kentucky would win big "because of me," a statement that drew national attention. He clarified that his confidence stems from his experience winning at the highest levels of college football, particularly during his time as offensive coordinator at Oregon, where he worked with Heisman finalist Dillon Gabriel.

On quarterbacks, Stein expressed enthusiasm for starter Kenny Minchey, praising his accuracy, mobility and football intelligence. "He's got all the support in the world from his teammates and from his coaches, and excited about his opportunity," Stein said.

The coach also explained the logic behind adding two junior college running backs to the roster, citing his preference for two-back sets and the importance of depth. He recently promoted Pete Nochta to general manager, saying the longtime Kentucky native and former football player was well-suited for the role.

Stein declined to focus on championship expectations despite roster improvements through the transfer portal and portal recruiting. "No, we just talk about our process," he said when asked if the program discusses SEC championships. "We just talk about what we have to do every single day to be our very best and let the results speak for themselves."
