LEXINGTON, Ky. — Transylvania University is emphasizing that real-world experience begins during college, not after graduation, highlighting the practical learning opportunities that shape its approach to liberal arts education.

The private institution, founded in 1780 and located in downtown Lexington, integrates experiential learning into its curriculum from the first year students arrive. During recent May term classes, accounting students visited the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government's Council Chamber, and history students worked with community partners at local cemeteries and clerk's offices to understand how their fields operate in practice.

According to the university, this approach connects classroom learning directly with community engagement. Because the campus sits within walking distance of local businesses, nonprofits, courts, healthcare organizations and civic spaces, students balance coursework with internships, research and community engagement beginning in their first year.

The university's commitment extends to career preparation and financial literacy. Transylvania launched a Digital Financial Literacy Course in partnership with WesBanco, providing all students access to essential financial education through topics including budgeting, credit management and investing. The program also includes mentorship and workshops with financial professionals.

According to the university's data, 95 percent of graduates are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation. The institution guarantees every student the opportunity to complete at least one high-impact learning experience through internships, study abroad or alumni mentoring.
