UK's Quaintance drafted by Spurs despite knee injuries
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Jayden Quaintance, a forward for the University of Kentucky men's basketball team, was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft on Tuesday night, marking the first Kentucky player chosen in this year's draft.
Quaintance spent his sophomore season at Kentucky but played in only four games due to a knee injury, averaging 5.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game. Despite the limited opportunities, scouts recognized his potential as a defensive-minded big man capable of protecting the rim and rebounding.
Quaintance arrived in Lexington after one season at Arizona State, where he committed after initially being locked into being a Wildcat with former coach John Calipari. The trajectory of the five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American has been shaped by injury.
The forward tore his ACL in his right knee in February 2025, which cut short his freshman campaign at Arizona State. After tearing his ACL, damaging his meniscus and fracturing his knee on Feb. 23, 2025, Quaintance fulfilled his original commitment, signing with Mark Pope's Cats for the 2025-26 season.
Despite a recovery that Pope described as breaking every benchmark, Quaintance's knee began swelling after games and couldn't keep up with SEC basketball so soon after his injury. He was not able to fully participate in the NBA Draft Combine due to ongoing injury issues and did not ultimately receive a green room invite for draft night.
Still, in spite of injury issues and an inability to showcase what left scouts raving, he was projected as a first rounder all the same. He is UK head coach Mark Pope's highest NBA draft selection and first first-rounder, and Kentucky has now had at least one player selected in 19 straight NBA drafts, the longest streak in the nation. With the Spurs, Quaintance will join a roster fresh off an NBA Finals appearance that already includes superstar Victor Wembanyama.
