UK's Quaintance makes NBA history as Pope's first lottery pick
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Jayden Quaintance became the highest NBA draft selection under Kentucky head coach Mark Pope on June 23, as the San Antonio Spurs selected the 6-foot-10 forward with the 20th overall pick in the first round.
Quaintance's selection marks a significant milestone for Pope's tenure at Kentucky. The former Wildcats player, who became the 23rd head coach of his alma mater in April 2024, has now seen three players drafted under his watch, following Koby Brea and Amari Williams who were selected in the 2025 draft. This is Pope's first opening-round pick.
The big man spent his sophomore year at Kentucky in 2026, appearing in just four games due to a knee injury. In his Wildcat debut against No. 22/20 St. John's, Quaintance recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks while finishing plus-18 in 17 minutes to help UK to an upset victory. He averaged 5.0 points and 5.0 rebounds across his limited appearances.
Quaintance's path to the NBA began at Arizona State, where he played as a freshman during the 2024-25 season. The former five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American started all 24 games for the Sun Devils, averaging 9.4 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting 52.5 percent from the field. He was named to both the Big 12 All-Freshman Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team, setting Arizona State freshman records with 63 total blocked shots.
After tearing his ACL in February 2025, Quaintance transferred to Kentucky to fulfill his original college commitment. Despite the setback and limited availability during his sophomore season, scouts recognized his defensive prowess and physical tools, which helped propel him into the first round.
Quaintance joins a Spurs team that posted a 62-20 record this past season and reached the NBA Finals. Kentucky has now placed at least one player in 19 consecutive NBA drafts, the longest active streak in college basketball.
