Waller Avenue to close at railroad crossing April 20-25
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Waller Avenue will be closed at the railroad crossing throughout each day from Monday, April 20 through Saturday, April 25, according to the University of Kentucky News Office.
The closure is part of a Norfolk Southern rail infrastructure project. While the road will be closed to through traffic at the crossing, local traffic will still be permitted on Waller Avenue to reach businesses and homes in the area.
Motorists seeking to travel between South Limestone and South Broadway are advised to use Virginia Avenue as an alternate route. The University of Kentucky recommended that drivers follow signage in the area for detour information. Transportation officials cautioned that Virginia Avenue is expected to experience heavier traffic during the six-day closure period.
Norfolk Southern, which operates a significant freight rail network through Kentucky, regularly undertakes maintenance and infrastructure improvements at railroad crossings throughout the region. The company maintains 19,200 route miles across 22 states and serves more than half the U.S. population and manufacturing base.
