Council to consider millions in spending, Solarize expansion Tuesday
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council is scheduled to consider spending proposals totaling millions of dollars at its work session on June 9, including major contracts for police equipment, waste management technology and a continued push to expand solar energy access for low-income residents.
The council will discuss approving a five-year agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. for body-worn cameras, tasers, digital evidence storage and training services for the police division. The deal would cost $2.6 million in fiscal year 2027, with funds already included in the mayor's proposed budget, according to the agenda.
A proposed partnership with Solar Energy Solutions for the 2026 Solarize Lexington Program would cost up to $460,000 and target qualified low- to moderate-income homeowners looking to install rooftop solar panels. The program, which relaunched in spring 2026, provides residents with access to discounted wholesale rates through a group-buying initiative designed to reduce renewable energy costs.
Waste management improvements are also on the agenda, with a proposal to purchase an optical sorter and robotics equipment for the city's Materials Recovery Facility. The $1.9 million purchase, funded via a federal grant, aims to improve sorting and recovery of plastic materials at the facility, according to the document.
Additional proposals would authorize the city to approve Route 4, with a Patriotic Concert scheduled for July 3 performed by the Lexington Philharmonic at a cost of $45,000. The council will also consider authorizing agreements with R.J. Corman Railroad Company for the setup and execution of Lexington's fourth of July fireworks display, with fireworks set to launch at 10 p.m. on July 4 near downtown.
The work session, which begins at 3 p.m. in the Council Chamber at 200 E. Main Street, includes discussions on sanitary sewer agreements, budget amendments and Sister Cities Commission expansion. Final votes on most items are typically deferred to the regular Thursday council meeting.
