Ron Mercer, a cornerstone of Kentucky's 1996 national championship team, was formally inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday at the Omni Nashville Downtown hotel. The former Wildcats standout completed one of basketball's most successful collegiate careers before moving on to an eight-year professional career in the NBA.

Mercer starred at Kentucky during the 1996 and 1997 seasons, earning consensus first-team All-American honors and making the NCAA Tournament All-Final Four Team twice. He was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and SEC Tournament MVP while helping the Wildcats win the national championship as a freshman in 1996 and reach the national finals as a sophomore in 1997. Over his two-year college career, Mercer scored 1,013 points before declaring early for the NBA Draft, where he was selected sixth overall by the Boston Celtics in 1997.

A Nashville native who was twice named Tennessee's "Mr. Basketball" while at Goodpasture Christian School, Mercer brought his success from high school courts to the college game and beyond. During his professional career, he played for seven NBA teams including the Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and New Jersey Nets. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1998, averaging 13.6 points per game throughout his career.

The 2026 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame class of 15 inductees includes other prominent Tennessee sports figures such as former Tennessee tight end and Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten, Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol, and former Stanford softball pitcher Monica Abbott. The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, established in 1966 and sponsored by the Tennessee Lottery, honors athletes, coaches, sports writers and administrators who have made meaningful impacts on the state's sports history.
