Former Wildcats Making Impact in Professional Baseball
Kentucky baseball has a long tradition of producing professional talent, and that legacy continues in 2026. According to UK Athletics, more than 40 former Wildcats are currently playing professional baseball across multiple leagues, including Major League Baseball and various minor league systems.
The list of accomplished UK alumni in professional baseball is impressive. Collin Cowgill, a Lexington native who played college baseball at Kentucky, is currently serving as first base coach for the Cincinnati Reds. Cowgill, who played for five MLB teams during his career, recently recovered from a meniscus tear suffered during spring training earlier this year.
Taylor Rogers, an All-Star relief pitcher, recently rejoined the Minnesota Twins on a one-year contract. Rogers was an 11th-round draft pick by Minnesota out of Kentucky in 2012 and had previously compiled two of his best seasons with the team—a 30-save campaign for a 101-win team in 2019 and an All-Star season in 2021. His twin brother, Tyler, is also a pitcher in Major League Baseball.
In Major League Baseball, seven former Wildcats are currently affiliated with professional teams, including Ryan Ritter with the Colorado Rockies, Ryan Waldschmidt with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and others. Additionally, more than 20 players are competing in minor league baseball across various organization levels, from rookie league to Triple-A affiliates.
The breadth of UK's professional representation extends beyond traditional American baseball, with pitcher Sean Hjelle playing in Japan and others competing in independent leagues like Banana Ball. Some former Wildcats are currently recovering from injuries as they work their way back through the minor league pipeline.
The University of Kentucky baseball program has long served as a pipeline to professional baseball, with players consistently advancing through draft selections and professional contracts, contributing to the school's sustained success in developing professional talent.
