Grimes Mill Road Bridge Closure Set for Early July
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Grimes Mill Road will be closed at McCalls Mill Road on July 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the city conducts repairs to the bridge railing over Boone Creek. The closure affects a key road in the scenic Boone Creek Scenic Byway, located southeast of Lexington in the Athens area.
The city of Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government will post detour signs to route drivers through McCalls Mill Road and Athens-Boonesboro Road (KY-418) around the work area. Motorists should plan extra time for trips through the region during the two-day closure.
The bridge carries significant importance to the local community. Originally constructed in 1937 and renovated in 2013, the structure spans Boone Creek as it flows through a deep gorge before emptying into the Kentucky River. The area is popular with kayakers and recreational paddlers during high-water conditions, and the scenic byway draws tourists interested in the region's historic horse farms, stone fences, and the original Grimes Mill and 1813 limestone house now home to the Iroquois Hunt Club.
The closure is part of the ongoing maintenance and safety improvements to the region's infrastructure as Lexington continues to support recreation and tourism in central Kentucky's hunt country.
