LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky's defensive line is embracing the aggressive, fast-paced style brought to the program by new head coach Will Stein and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, with defensive line coach Anwar Stewart describing his group as mentally tough despite the heat of August practices.

Following Wednesday's practice, Stewart praised his unit's intensity while adapting to a scheme markedly different from the previous staff's approach. "This is a very aggressive, up the field defense," Stewart said, noting that the new system has particularly benefited returning contributors like Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace and Jaden Williams, who have "been playing really fast."

Stewart said Stein, who arrived from Oregon where he served as offensive coordinator, has been deeply involved in defensive meetings and challenges the defense daily. "He's a head coach and he knows ball," Stewart said. "He pushes us every day to be the best version of ourselves."

Bateman, who came to Kentucky after two seasons at Texas A&M where his defense helped the Aggies reach the College Football Playoff, brings experience with versatile defensive schemes. The new coordinator's approach allows Kentucky to "play fast, we can slow it down," Stewart said. "We could jump in and out of different defenses, different fronts. It's very diverse."

The defensive line group includes returning interior linemen Jamarrion Harkless and Dominic Wiseman, along with Kalen Edwards. Though the team is still in the early stages of the 2026 season, Stewart expressed optimism about the defensive front's potential. "The Cats defensive line figures to be one of the strengths of the defense," he said, adding that the unit is "working each and every day" to master the new system.
