LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky's volleyball team made a strong statement in its home opener Friday night, sweeping Utah State at Memorial Coliseum while honoring the program's historic 2025 NCAA Tournament run.

The Wildcats unveiled their runner-up banner before the match — a reminder of their national championship game appearance in December — but did not let the ceremony affect their play. According to UK Athletics, Kentucky dominated the opening set with a dominant 25-13 victory, recording 16 kills and zero errors on 23 swings for a .696 hitting percentage. The team also achieved a perfect 100 percent side out percentage in the first set, meaning every Utah State serve resulted in a Kentucky point.

Middle blocker Lizzie Carr led the attack with nine kills and a .583 hitting percentage. "We didn't know a lot about Utah State, they hadn't played a match yet," Carr said. "We were just really focused on what we were going to go on on our side."

The second set saw Kentucky maintain excellence, with the perfect side out percentage continuing until late in the frame before Kentucky won 25-9. Head coach Craig Skinner praised the defensive effort. "That's very hard to do in practice or against any team," Skinner said of the side out percentage.

For the complete match, Kentucky's side out percentage was 80.4 percent. Junior Morgan Gaerte contributed seven kills on a .500 hitting percentage and credited the team's ability to maintain focus with a commanding lead. "I think it's just playing for one another, playing for our team," Gaerte said.

The victory kicked off the Bluegrass Battle hosted by Kentucky in Lexington, where the Wildcats are seeking to return to the national championship game after finishing as 2025 runners-up.
