Lane closures scheduled on Newtown Court for drainage work
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will close a single lane of Newtown Court overnight this week to allow for drainage pipe installation as part of the broader Newtown Pike widening project, according to a press release from KYTC District 7.
Beginning Tuesday night at 11 p.m. and continuing nightly through Saturday, May 30, contractors will temporarily close one lane of Newtown Court at mile marker 1.73. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. each morning. The closures are weather permitting and subject to change based on unforeseen circumstances.
The work supports the Newtown Pike widening project, which will add a lane in each direction on Newtown Pike from New Circle Road to Interstate 75 when completed in 2027. The expansion aims to improve safety and traffic flow while handling growing traffic volumes in the area.
The project includes notable enhancements to the Legacy Trail, Lexington's popular 11-mile recreational path. Crews are building a $1.5 million pedestrian underpass below Newtown Pike at Citation Boulevard to safely separate trail users from vehicle traffic. Work on the trail improvements began March 30, with the underpass and additional bike paths expected to be complete alongside the road widening in 2027.
The Newtown Pike widening is part of the broader Driving Lexington Progress initiative, a $170 million Kentucky Transportation Cabinet effort to improve safety and ease congestion on I-75/I-64, New Circle Road, Leestown Road, and Newtown Pike.
Motorists should allow extra time for travel during the overnight closures and check GoKY or Waze for real-time traffic updates.
