Lexington offering household hazardous waste disposal Saturday
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of household chemicals this weekend during Lexington's spring household hazardous waste collection event.
The free collection runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 1631 Old Frankfort Pike, with residents entering via Jimmie Campbell Drive. According to the City of Lexington, the event accepts paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, pesticides and other hazardous materials that pose environmental and health risks if improperly disposed.
Improper disposal of these chemicals can pollute air, water or soil and pose a threat to human health, city officials warn. Electronic waste items, including vape pens and e-cigarettes containing lithium-ion batteries, will also be collected at the event. The city emphasizes that vape products should never be placed in regular trash or recycling carts because the batteries can cause fires.
The city holds these collection events twice yearly, typically in May and October, providing residents with designated times to drop off accumulated hazardous materials. For residents needing year-round options, some common household hazardous wastes have alternative disposal methods available, including drop-off locations for used motor oil and medications at police facilities.
Event updates regarding wait times and weather will be posted on the city's Facebook and Instagram accounts. For more information or to view a complete list of accepted items, residents can call LexCall at 311 or visit the city's waste management website.
