Lexington seeks 2026 Environmental Award nominations
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Environmental Commission is accepting nominations for its 2026 Environmental Commission Environmental Awards, recognizing individuals, organizations, businesses and projects that have made significant contributions to improving the community's environment.
The commission seeks to maintain and enhance the distinctive environment of Lexington and Fayette County through environmental education, awareness and stewardship programs, including presenting annual awards for outstanding environmental stewardship. The Environmental Commission was created in 1969 and is funded by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.
The awards celebrate outstanding efforts that protect natural resources, promote sustainability, and advance environmental awareness across the community. Award recipients demonstrate improvements in air, water, and soil quality; elimination and reduction of litter and waste; aesthetic improvements through landscaping and architectural design; or educational projects that enhance environmental awareness. Eligible projects must have been completed or show demonstrated results between 2020 and December 31, 2025.
Community members, organizations, and institutions are encouraged to submit nominations in five award categories. Nominations are evaluated using criteria including environmental impact, environmental justice, innovation, environmental awareness, partnerships, demonstrated results, and transferability. Supporting materials such as photographs, testimonials, and letters of support are encouraged.
Lexington's environmental efforts align with a recent achievement: in November 2025, Lexington was awarded the Gold level designation by SolSmart, a national program that helps cities become solar energy leaders, making Lexington the second city in Kentucky to receive recognition.
Nominations must be received by Thursday, April 30, 2026. For nomination forms, submission instructions, and additional information, visit lexingtonky.gov/ec or contact the Environmental Commission at EnvComLFUCG@gmail.com.
