LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington Senior Center will celebrate 10 years of operation on Sept. 9 with an event featuring trivia, photos from the past decade, recognition of longtime members, performances by the Prime Time Dancers, and a visit from Mayor Linda Gorton. The celebration at the main hub on 195 Life Lane will kick off at 1 p.m.

The milestone comes as Lexington's senior population continues to expand rapidly. Nearly 25 percent of the city's residents are over age 60, according to city officials. Gorton, who as Vice Mayor advocated for the original center a decade ago, noted the significance of the achievement. "Now, as Mayor, we will be opening another new center this fall, this one in Shillito Park," she said. "Lexington's growing senior population deserves excellent services."

The Lexington Senior Center provides recreational activities and connections to needed resources for residents aged 60 and older. The main facility on Life Lane operates alongside three satellite locations: The Bell House, Charles Young Center and Eldercrafters at Black & Williams Center.

Kristy Stambaugh, director of Aging and Disability Services, emphasized the importance of the centers to the community. "As an Age-Friendly and Dementia Friendly community, Lexington is fortunate to have so much to offer," Stambaugh said. "Our senior centers are the happiest places in town."

A new 26,000-square-foot, $24 million Senior & Therapeutic Recreation Center is under construction in Shillito Park and is expected to open later this year. The dual-purpose facility will serve both seniors and participants in the city's therapeutic recreation program, which serves individuals with disabilities and special needs.

Sean Wright, Aging and Disability Services Program Manager Senior, reflected on the center's legacy. "Ten years strong — built on compassion, connection and community. Here's to the people who make the Lexington Senior Center more than a place — it's a place to belong," Wright said.
