Lexington urges residents to report flood damage following Monday downpour
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Following a severe flash flooding event on June 22, Mayor Linda Gorton has urged residents to report damage to city officials as cleanup and recovery efforts continue across the community.
According to a statement from the city of Lexington, the National Weather Service reported that Lexington-Fayette County received 2.5 to 3 inches of rain in less than an hour and a half during the morning downpour, triggering multiple rescue operations and road closures across the region.
The Lexington Fire Department evacuated five residents from an apartment complex on Press Avenue and Transcript Avenue near UK Hospital, where at least a foot and a half of water filled individual units. Additional rescue operations occurred on Old Harrodsburg Road, where crews rescued multiple people from stranded vehicles.
Gorton outlined steps for affected residents: prioritize safety in flooded basements, report property damage to 311 for city evaluation, and document losses with photographs before beginning cleanup to support insurance claims. Multiple roads throughout the city experienced high water conditions, including South Upper Street, South Broadway, and New Circle Road, disrupting traffic patterns throughout the morning.
Officials emphasized the dangers of driving through flooded roadways, repeating their familiar warning: "Turn around, don't drown."
