LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Budget, Finance & Economic Development Committee is scheduled to examine how federal policy shifts are affecting Lexington's businesses and government operations, according to the Tuesday meeting agenda.

The committee will hear presentations on two fronts. The first focuses on federal policy impacts on local businesses, featuring a presentation from Charles Aull, vice president of policy at the Kentucky Chamber, about how tariffs, fuel prices, immigration restrictions, and recent tax legislation are reshaping Kentucky's economy. The second examines how shifting federal priorities and policy changes are affecting Lexington's government operations, particularly its portfolio of federal grants valued at approximately $50 million to $60 million annually.

According to the federal government presentation scheduled for the committee, Lexington has not yet lost federal grant funding due to shifting federal priorities, though the city experienced a "close call" in 2025 when a major SAMHSA grant was temporarily withheld before being reinstated following public outcry. The presentation notes that a proposed amendment to the federal register could allow current and future administrations to award and rescind grants for political reasons.

The committee will also hear about opportunities from recently enacted housing legislation. The 21st Century Road to Housing Act, passed in July 2026, includes provisions that expand how communities like Lexington can use Community Development Block Grants for new affordable housing construction and provides incentives for communities that reduce housing barriers.

The meeting will also include a review of the city's July financial performance, which showed July revenues of approximately $30.7 million against expenses of $43.4 million. Committee members James Brown, Dan Wu, and other members are scheduled to approve the June 23 committee meeting summary.

The committee meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chamber at 200 E. Main Street.
