LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Louisville men's soccer team completed a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Kentucky 3-2 in the 2026 edition of the Battle of the Bluegrass at the Bell Soccer Complex on Monday night, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

Kentucky dominated the first half, with transfer Michael Lee scoring in the 18th minute before Yasha Schaerer doubled the lead in the 31st minute. The Wildcats appeared poised for a strong early-season victory as they took a commanding 2-0 lead into halftime.

Louisville mounted a dramatic second-half rally, cutting the deficit in half when Andres Escudero Martin converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute following a yellow card to Kentucky midfielder Marcus Andersen. Forward Giacomo Zizza, who was making his Louisville debut, then scored twice in the final seven minutes — in the 83rd and 90th minutes — to deliver the Cardinals a 3-2 victory before a packed crowd.

The loss leaves Kentucky with a 0-1-1 record after opening the season with a 2-2 draw against Western Michigan. Kentucky leads the all-time series 15-10-6 over 31 previous matchups, but Louisville has seized momentum in the rivalry.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday when they travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, to face Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. ET. Admission to all 2026 Kentucky Men's Soccer regular season home matches is free to the public.
