LEXINGTON, Ky. — A man has been charged with assault on a police officer and several other felonies after a traffic stop near a local gas station left a Lexington Police officer seriously injured Tuesday night.

According to the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, Naqeeb Mufallah, 31, was arrested and charged with Assault 1st Degree against a Police Officer, Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree against a Police Officer, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon, Fleeing or Evading Police 1st Degree, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Failure to Render Aid related to Serious Physical Injury. He is also being held on unrelated warrants.

The incident occurred just before 11 p.m. Tuesday when an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the Meijer Gas Station on Ruccio Way. When the officer approached the vehicle, the driver fled, dragging the officer for several yards before police caught up with the suspect vehicle following a brief pursuit.

The officer was transported to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Mufallah is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center pending court proceedings.
