LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's District 7 office announced Wednesday that construction work on New Circle Road will require overnight lane closures on August 26, with contractors leveling bridge approaches at two locations to ensure smooth transitions for drivers.

Starting at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, contractors will close the single far left lane in each direction on New Circle Road. The outer loop closure will begin at Newtown Pike and extend just past the railroad bridge, while the inner loop closure will begin near Old Frankfort Pike and end past Leestown Road. All lanes in these sections will reopen by 7 a.m. Thursday.

At 10 p.m., the outer loop of New Circle Road will fully close at Georgetown Road, with motorists directed to detour via Georgetown Road to Citation Boulevard to Leestown Road and back to New Circle Road. The inner loop will also fully close at Leestown Road at the same time, with drivers exiting at Leestown Road, continuing straight through the intersection, and re-entering New Circle Road via the entrance ramp. Both full closures will reopen by 6 a.m. Thursday.

The work is part of the New Circle Road widening project, a $51 million project set for completion in summer 2027. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is widening New Circle Road between Leestown Road and Georgetown Road and reconstructing the Leestown interchange into a double crossover diamond, a design intended to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes.

KYTC officials urged drivers to plan accordingly for possible delays and to use caution in the work zone. The work and closures are tentative and subject to change depending on weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.
