LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will temporarily close Newtown Circle in both directions at the Newtown Pike intersection Tuesday night to allow for drainage pipe installation, according to a press release from KYTC District 7.

The closure will begin at 11 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, with all lanes reopening by 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. The work is part of the Newtown Pike (KY 922) Widening project, which is targeted for completion in summer 2027.

The Transportation Cabinet said Newtown Pike between New Circle Road and Interstate 75 is one of the most congested routes during rush hour, and the widening project aims to address capacity concerns. When finished, the project will add one lane in each direction on Newtown Pike from New Circle Road to I-75, improving safety and traffic flow.

In addition to widening the roadway, the project includes improvements to the Legacy Trail. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and note that weather conditions, emergencies and other factors may affect the schedule.

Drivers can monitor traffic conditions on GoKY or through Waze on their smartphones. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet covers 12 counties in the District 7 region, including Fayette County.
