NASSAU, The Bahamas — No. 3 Kentucky's volleyball team fell to No. 8 SMU on Saturday, 3-1 (27-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22) in the opening round of the inaugural Paradise Invitational at the BahaMar Convention Center and Resort, according to UK Athletics.

The loss marks Kentucky's second defeat of the season, dropping the Wildcats to 6-2. SMU improved to 6-1 with the victory. Kentucky will face Houston in a consolation match on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN2, while SMU advances to the championship match at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN against Purdue.

The first set proved pivotal, with Kentucky holding three set points at 24-22, 24-23 and 25-24 before SMU executed a 3-0 run to capture the set 27-25. The Wildcats responded by winning the second set 25-21, highlighted by a service run from junior Asia Thigpen that sparked a 5-0 run and gave Kentucky a 19-15 lead. Morgan Gaerte and Brooklyn DeLeye both contributed strongly for UK, combining for key blocks and kills.

SMU regained control in the third set, closing with a decisive 12-3 run to win 25-21 despite Kentucky leading much of the frame. The Mustangs shot .429 in the set while Kentucky managed just .162, plagued by eight attack errors—a season-high for the Wildcats in a single set.

In the fourth set, SMU reached match point at 24-21 before Kentucky's Morgan Gaerte and Kennedy Washington combined for kills and blocks to tie the match at 24-24. The Mustangs ultimately prevailed at 25-22 on a transition kill.

DeLeye led Kentucky's offensive effort with seven kills in the match, while Kassie O'Brien orchestrated the Wildcat attack with 22 assists. Defensively, Molly Tuozzo led the floor with seven digs and Brooklyn DeLeye added four in the opening set.
