LEXINGTON, Ky. — A new raised crosswalk will be installed at the intersection of West Short and Market Streets, with construction requiring lane closures from Oct. 5 through Oct. 16.

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government will close one lane of West Short Street for 24 hours at a time during the two-week project to accommodate concrete work. Active construction will occur on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with drivers advised to exercise caution and watch for flaggers in the work zone.

Beyond the raised crosswalk installation, the intersection will undergo milling, paving and restriping as part of the broader safety improvement effort. Raised crosswalks, which elevate the pedestrian crossing surface to match sidewalk level, have been shown to reduce collisions and enhance safety by increasing pedestrian visibility and naturally reducing vehicle speeds in the area.

The West Short and Market intersection is a frequently trafficked area in downtown Lexington, making the safety improvements part of the city's ongoing efforts to create more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. Motorists should plan for potential delays during the construction period and seek alternate routes when possible.
