School officer's 50-mile walk earns Legends tribute
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington Legends will honor Jeremy Day as the Hometown Hero during Friday's Baseball & Boom Bash game against the High Point Rockers, recognizing the school resource officer's commitment to supporting students through an ambitious summer fundraising campaign.
Day, a resource officer with Fayette County Public Schools, will walk 50 miles across 29 elementary schools on July 23 to raise funds for shoes, clothing and other back-to-school essentials for students in need. "Every student deserves to start the school year feeling confident and ready to learn," Day said. "This walk is an opportunity for our community to come together and support children who may need a little extra help."
The campaign, called The Fayette 50: Miles for Smiles, represents an unusual commitment to student welfare from a law enforcement officer who typically focuses on school safety. The nonprofit Fayette Education Foundation is partnering with Day to help raise awareness and coordinate donations with community members interested in supporting Fayette County Public Schools students.
Carrie Boling, executive director of the Fayette Education Foundation, praised Day's initiative as emblematic of community values. "When a school resource officer spends part of his own summer walking 50 miles to help students, it reminds us that supporting children is a community responsibility," Boling said. "Officer Day's commitment reflects the very best of Fayette County, and we're proud to help turn that dedication into meaningful support for students and families."
The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Legends Field, and fundraising for the campaign continues through the end of July, with donations available online.
