LEXINGTON, Ky. — An ad hoc Solar Work Group of the Urban County Planning Commission is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, to discuss refinements to Article 31 of the zoning ordinance covering solar energy systems.

The special meeting will begin at 10 a.m. EST in the Council Chamber at the LFUCG Government Center. According to the agenda, the group will hear stakeholder comments and then discuss proposed amendments to Article 31, which provides guidance on siting, development, construction, installation, and decommissioning of solar energy systems.

The Solar Working Group previously presented recommendations to the General Government & Planning Committee in March 2026, which voted to send the proposal to the Environmental Commission, Planning Commission, and Rural Land Management Board for feedback. The proposed amendments would establish rules governing solar installations across different zoning categories.

The ordinance development aligns with the city's goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as outlined in the community's Comprehensive Plan, Imagine Lexington 2045. Lexington is also working to be recognized as a SolSmart community — a designation for cities, towns and counties that are solar energy leaders.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to provide stakeholder comment during the meeting. The work group consists of Council Members Liz Sheehan, Hil Boone, Tyler Morton, and Dave Sevigny, who have been meeting to further discuss solar technologies on properties outside the Urban Service Area.
