This day in Lexington, May second, finds us in one of the city's sweetest seasons. While history stays quiet today, the Bluegrass is anything but silent.

This is peak spring in Central Kentucky, when the dogwoods that line our neighborhood streets show off their white and pink blooms, and the famous horse farms surrounding the city wear their most vibrant green. Downtown, office workers are trading their winter coats for lighter jackets, grabbing lunch from food trucks that have returned to their regular spots around Triangle Park and the courthouse square.

At Keeneland, the spring meet is winding down after six weeks of thoroughbred racing, drawing visitors from around the world to our backyard. The University of Kentucky campus buzzes with end-of-semester energy, students studying under the old oak trees or catching some sunshine on the quad between Funkhouser Building and Memorial Hall.

In gardens across Lexington, from Chevy Chase to Hartland, tulips and daffodils are giving way to the early roses and peonies that will carry us into summer. It's the kind of May day that reminds us why people fall in love with this city, where horses and history meet rolling hills and genuine hospitality.
