This Day in Lexington
This day in Lexington, May eleventh, the history books might be quiet, but the city is anything but sleepy. This is prime Derby season afterglow, when the spotlight has moved on from Churchill Downs but the spring energy lingers in the Bluegrass.
Mid-May in Lexington means the dogwoods have finished their show and the redbuds are fading, but now it's time for the real stars. The horse farms are at their most gorgeous, with that brilliant Kentucky green stretching as far as you can see. Morning temperatures are sitting pretty around sixty degrees, and by afternoon we're looking at perfect mid-seventies weather that makes you want to spend the entire day outside.
This is graduation season too. The University of Kentucky campus is buzzing with families in town for commencement ceremonies, and downtown restaurants are packed with celebration dinners. Over at Keeneland, they're in the quiet period between meets, but the barns are still active with morning workouts.
If you're thinking about taking that scenic drive along Old Frankfort Pike or Paris Pike, there's no better time than right now. The countryside is showing off, and those stone fences look picture perfect against all that green. Here's to the city we share.
