Waller Avenue railroad crossing closing for Norfolk Southern project
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Waller Avenue will close at the railroad crossing for 24 hours a day from Monday, April 20 through Saturday, April 25, according to the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.
The closure is part of a Norfolk Southern maintenance or construction project. While the road will be completely impassable at the crossing, local traffic will be permitted on Waller Avenue to reach businesses and homes in the immediate area, officials said.
Drivers who need to travel between South Limestone and South Broadway should use Virginia Avenue as an alternate route during the closure period. The city anticipates heavier traffic on Virginia Avenue and recommends following signage in the area for detour information.
Norfolk Southern Railway is a Class I freight railroad operating in the Eastern United States, with operations throughout 22 states. The Louisville Southern's former rights-of-way currently form parts of the Class I Norfolk Southern system, and the company maintains an active presence in Lexington as part of its Louisville Subdivision network.
The temporary closure may impact commuters and businesses in the area. Residents and drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their commutes during the six-day closure period. The work is expected to be completed by the end of April 25.
