LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet began major traffic shifts on Interstate 64 in Clark, Montgomery and Bath counties on Monday as part of a significant highway rehabilitation project, according to KYTC District 7.

Traffic shifts started at the bridge over Prewitt-Grassy Lick Road at mile point 105, with all traffic now forced to the opposite side of the interstate. Motorists will encounter one lane of traffic in each direction while construction continues, and both directions now have an 11-foot width restriction. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises travelers to reduce speed and use extra caution.

The $19.6 million project encompasses 16 miles of Interstate 64 from mile point 101.7 to 117.8, featuring bridge and overpass repairs, drainage and guardrail upgrades, and repaving. The work is expected to continue through November 2026.

"We ask for everyone's patience as you travel through the work zone as work progresses throughout the year," said District 7 Chief Engineer Kelly Baker. "When the work is complete, the improvements to the pavement and bridges will provide a safer corridor for all who travel this section of Interstate."

Work will advance in phases, with bridge repairs followed by milling and paving operations. Currently, lane closures are in place on I-64 between mile points 101 and 106, with motorists expected to encounter changing traffic patterns as construction continues. The project is scheduled on a tentative basis and remains subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen factors.
