Lexington seeks public input on Winchester Road improvements
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization are seeking community input as they conduct a comprehensive study of Winchester Road, a major corridor experiencing rapid development and increasing traffic concerns.
LFUCG announced the Winchester Road Corridor Study to evaluate the road's current conditions and identify improvements for safety, accessibility and connectivity. An online survey is open through June 20 for residents and commuters to share their experiences.
The survey asks about travel patterns, safety concerns and desired improvements along the corridor. The study will evaluate land use patterns and transportation conditions, identify opportunities to improve safety and accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and transit users, help guide future development, and examine roadway design and community needs to develop recommendations for a safer and more accessible corridor.
The Winchester Road study comes as the corridor faces mounting development pressures and traffic challenges. A zone application has been filed to develop a Kroger and apartments on Winchester Road between Executive Drive and Patchen Wilkes Drive. Business owners along the road have noted that traffic volume has picked up tremendously.
Safety has emerged as a critical concern. A 60-year-old woman was hit and killed while walking on Winchester Road in 2023. The state road plan includes more than $7 million over several years for right-of-way, utilities and construction of widening U.S. 60, or Winchester Road, from Polo Club Boulevard to Haley Road.
Responses to the survey will be used alongside technical analysis to identify potential solutions, inform priorities, and guide the development of potential improvement strategies. The Winchester Road Corridor Study is expected to continue through next spring, with additional opportunities for public engagement planned as the project progresses.
