LEXINGTON, Ky. — Following severe thunderstorms that brought record rainfall and downed trees across the city this week, the city government has announced temporary relief for residents dealing with large amounts of yard debris.

According to the city's official guidance, residents with city curbside waste collection do not need to bundle branches and other yard debris for the next week. Storm debris must be cut into sections of 4 feet or less and can be left at the curb to be picked up on regular collection days.

The storms on August 11-13 brought significant damage throughout the region. Strong winds and heavy rain moved through the Lexington area around 5 p.m. Tuesday, bringing down trees and power lines across the city. Lexington recorded record-setting rain with 2.59 inches on August 12, breaking the previous August 12 rainfall record of 1.63 inches set in 1993. Police responded to 20 non-injury crashes, five injury crashes and 78 traffic hazards during the storms.

All Fayette County residents may take advantage of additional disposal options. The Haley Pike Waste Management Facility at 4216 Hedger Lane offers free disposal of up to two pickup truck loads of yard waste per month, available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
